Financial Aid

The North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services has a long history of providing higher education scholarships to financially needy people seeking to work in the field of addiction treatment.

The program has been known both as North Carolina Professional Addiction Counselor Training (NCPACT) or Education for Substance Abuse Professionals (ESAP).   It has served to help over 200 people take the coursework they need for professional advancement.  Many past recipients continue to serve as leaders in our state.

Beginning in July 2010, the program is being refocused in order to meet the most pressing substance abuse workforce need in North Carolina.  The program is being redesigned to more rapidly produce candidates prepared to become Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialists.

All new candidates for scholarships must be already enrolled in one of the nine Masters programs whose curricula are approved for Criteria C as designated by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board.  These include the masters schools listed under graduate school tab on this website.

If you are enrolled in one of these programs and interested in consideration for financial assistance, please contact Mary Powell at mary.powell@governorsinstitute.org.

Funded wholly or in part by the federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant Fund (CFDA #93.959) as a project of the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities & Substance Abuse Services.
